Why chip bags have so much air in them

3 min read

Morning Lays!

Has this ever happened to you?

You go to sit down and open a delicious, crunchy bag of Sour Cream & Onion chips…

You open the packet.

Only to find...

It's like 70% AIR!!!

Ripoff right?

Why are chip bags so full of air??

Well it turns out there's actually a reason for all of this air…

First…the “air” we’re talking about is Nitrogen.

It keeps the chips nice and fresh and extends their shelf life by preventing the growth of bacteria which can spoil the chips making them taste yucky.

So that's good.

But why do you need so damn much of it?

Well you don't want the chips you ordered arriving all broken up right?

Think of the air like a protective layer.

A protective layer that prevents your chips from getting smooshed

On their long journey from factory ⟶ face.

Without this air cushioning, bumps and jostles could easily turn your chips into crumbs.

The air kinda acts like a shock absorber.

Distributing the pressure evenly across the bag so the chips don't have any pressure on them that could cause them to break.

It turns out chip engineers have calculated the EXACT amount of air needed in the bag.

Any less and chips end up broken…

Any more and the bags could explode so chips also end up broken…
