Why Do We Do Christmas Trees? 🎄

3 min read

Morning Christmasy people!

Christmas trees are kinda weird…

I mean think about it.

For some reason pretty much every household in the christian world brings a dead tree into their house and puts some flashy lights and decorations on it…

So where did this weird Christmas tree idea come from?

Well it was the 700s.

And we've got this monk dude called Saint Boniface.

Boniface had just been on a rather long walk…

ALLLLL the way from England to Germany, for some reason.

But then he hears something…

So he pokes his head through the bushes and finds some norse pagan dudes preparing to sacrifice a pig to a sacred…oak tree!?

The monk is like:

So he runs over there and cuts down the oak tree with one swing of an axe.

But then a fir tree sprang up in the spot where the oak tree once stood…

Personally, I call bullsh*t lol.

But the church in Germany really liked this story, so in the middle ages they started decorating pine trees outside churches with apples and candles on Christmas Eve!

But this was still just a German thing…

How’d it get worldwide?

Well, a couple hundred years later in 1841 this German Prince called Prince Albert married the Queen of England at the time, Queen Victoria!

YUCK. GET A ROOM!

Now because Albert was German, he liked to practice German traditions…

So every year he would decorate a pine tree for Christmas.

This unusual German tradition was then illustrated in the paper for the whole world to see!

And because royals were basically fashion icons at the time, soon everybody started doing it!

Happy Holidays Derds!
