Wtf is earwax?

3 min read

Morning lug holes!

You know ear wax??

The weird ass ear gunk…?

What actually is that stuff?

Well earwax technically isn't a wax at all.

Is called ear-wax only because it's kinda “waxy” lol.

It would make an awful candle.

It's really just a mixture of dead skin, oily sweat and the fatty oils found in your ear holes.

And tada, Earwax!

Thing is… not all earwax is made the same.

It can come in many different colors and consistencies.

Some are flaky and dry, others can be sticky and moist.

Ughh… yuck…

Ok, but why do we even have earwax at all?

Here’s the thing, earwax actually seems to keep our ears healthy!

How?

Firstly it kinda acts like a lubricator i.e. makes the ear slippy and wet inside.

Preventing dryness and itchiness.

It's also like a bodyguard, but for your ear, trapping debris and microbes and preventing them from entering the ear canal.

So when you think about getting rid of your earwax… think again.

In fact the ear actually has its OWN way of getting rid of earwax.

So you shouldn't really need to do anything.

Look, as new skin cells form in the ear they grow right near the eardrum and push the old ones forward.

Forming a kinda conveyor belt, making new earwax and slowly but surely pushing it out the ear at about 100 micrometers per day…

Whereas those q-tip things?

They may get little bits of earwax, sure.

But they’re more likely just to push larger chunks further WAYYYY back into your ear…
