How Do Glasses Help Us See? 👓

3 min read

Morning 4 eyes!

Somehow, all it takes to make your vision go from this:

To this:

Is just 2 tiny little pieces of glass.

But, how exactly do glasses help us see?

Well, first we have to quickly understand how the eye works.

So, light bounces off whatever you’re looking at, say this picture of Durds mom.

The light from this picture then gets beamed into your eye.

But as it goes through the lens of your eye, It slightly changes the direction of the light.

Which focuses the beam onto the back of the eye, where the Retina is.

This is what's called refraction.

Now, when the light from the picture of Durd’s mom reaches the back of the eye, the Retina sends your brain an encoded message accurately explaining what that image looks like.

The brain then turns this electrically encoded message into an image inside your mind.

It then flips this image.

(Because for some reason, our eyes naturally record everything upside down.)

And tada! Now you know what you're looking at.

But here's the problem…

In some people, the light from whatever they are looking at does not get properly focused on the Retina.

This is one of the main causes of blurry vision.

If the light is focused instead just before the Retina, like this:

You have something called Nearsightedness meaning near objects appear clear, but further away objects appear blurry.

On the other hand…

If the light instead is focuses just after the Retina, like this:

You have something called Farsightedness meaning far away objects appear clear but near away objects appear blurry.

But don't worry, this is where the glasses come in.

Nearsightedness is fixed by using a little piece of glass with this shape:

Called a Concave lens.

This time, when light bounces into your eye, the glass bends the light slightly to better focus it on the Retina.

And the opposite is the case for Farsightedness. This is fixed by using a little piece of glass like this:

Called a Convex lens.

This time, when the light bounces into your eye, it also bends the light slightly to better focus it on the Retina.

So it doesn't matter whether you struggle to see far away or close up, glasses have your back!
