WTF Are Hurricanes? ⛈️

3 min read

Morning Coriolis!

Hurricanes are… kinda bad.

I mean, you’ve probably heard a lot about this guy relatively recently:

Just look what he did to florida:

And this wasn’t even considered a “bad” one… lol.

But what exactly are Hurricanes???

Well, first you need some hot water.

Like, water down by the equator.

Some of this warm water evaporates into the air, cause it’s so hot.

Which causes a layer of warm moist air over the ocean surface.

Like this:

But then this air rises up!!

Creating an area of LOW AIR PRESSURE.

Loads of surrounding air then IMMEDIATELY floods in to fill that low pressure zone.

But then that air gets warm…

Rises…

And the cycle continues.

But as all that warm moist air keeps on rising up… it cools off and forms clouds.

GIANT STORMY CLOUDS.

Finally, if the wind conditions are juuuuust right and juuuuust steady enough…

This cloud might start… to spin!

Now we’ve got a storm on our hands…

But don't worry!

Hurricanes are powered by the warm ocean.

Meaning, if a hurricane tries to go on land, it'll just fizzle out and die!

(After it causes some damage, of course)

Yikes…
