How Do Laxatives Work? 💩

3 min read

Morning Butt Gushers!

Humans poop a lot.

But every now and then the dredded constipation strikes.

This is where laxatives come in.

Simply pop in a tablet…

Wait, a little while…

And then the floodgates will open!

Of Course they do.

But how do these magical butt tablets actually work?

Well, here's how the most common type works.

Known by me as Planty Poop Softeners, but known by everyone else as Bulk-Formers.

This type of laxative is a tablet full of some stuff called dietary fibers.

What are dietary fibers?

Well, they’re basically just plants that we struggle a little to digest.

Stuff like this:

So, when we consume this type of stuff, it flows down our body, doesn't get digested, and ends up in the intestines. AKA the poop tubes.

Now, this dietary fiber stuff starts acting like a tiny sponge in your intestines, sucking up a load of water.

Which does 2 super important things:

1: Bulks up your poop.

All this extra stuff in your poop tubes adds extra size to your poop.

This increased bulkiness helps to stimulate the muscles in your intestines to contract and push the stool along.

2: Softens up your poop.

Now, by absorbing water, the dietary fiber also makes your poop super soft and easy to pass.

Imagine trying to push a dry, hard lump of clay versus a soft, moist ball of playdough.

Yikes… I think I'd go with the Playdough.

Anyway, yeah, so this process starts slowly moving the poop through the intestines.

(The only catch is, this takes like a day to work).

So, after a day, you might start to feel the urge.

And it can finally plop right on out!
