Why Do We Puke? 🤮

3 min read

Morning Vomiteers!

Puke, Throwup, Vomit, Barf, Sick, Upchuck…

Just some of the many different names for when we humans eject stomach stuff from our mouths.

But WHY exactly do we puke?

Put very simply, puking is our body's way of getting rid of something it REALLY doesn’t want inside it.

How does it do that?

Well, inside your brain there's this little area known as the:

(I know, sick ass name)

But this little area is kinda unique.

Cause, unlike the rest of your brain, it lacks the blood-brain barrier, AKA the brain's defensive barrier against harmful substances that might be in your blood.

Which means this little area can detect things like:

Just from what it finds floating about in your blood!

Pretty cool.

Now… there's many reasons why we might throw up, including:

So let's say you’ve got the most common one, a stomach bug.

The little trigger zone from earlier will be able to detect this in your blood.

So it sends signals to the vomiting center part of the brain.

Officially triggering… THE PUKE RESPONSE.

First, our stomach muscle start contracting a lil bit.

Then our mouth will start to produce more saliva to protect our teeth from the incoming stomach acid.

Your blood will then starts flowing towards your internal organs, making your face lose color.

Your heart rate increases and you begin to breathe heavily and faster…!!

The diaphragm starts to contract to squeeze the stomach to create pressure

Aaaand finally, the abdominal muscles contract, and…

You throw up!
