Wtf Are Seasons? 🍁

3 min read

Morning Seasonsals!

Have you ever wondered why things outside seem to change all year round?

You know.

Spring:

Summer:

Fall:

Winter:

But why do seasons even happen?

Well, it's actually because our home, the Earth, leans a little bit.

Like this:

A really, really long time ago (like a billion years ago), scientists think the Earth was hit by something…

This impact was so strong it actually knocked Earth a little, giving it a tilt.

(Of about 23 degrees)

Okay…

So, now we’ve got a tilted Earth traveling around the sun.

Completing one full trip around the sun every year.

(This is what a year is)

But the thing is, because the Earth is titled, some parts of the Earth get way less light than usual during parts of the year.

This is what causes seasons!

Here's a diagram showing how this looks:

Let's take a closer look at the summer one:

You can clearly see that, because of the tilt, the northern part of the Earth is tilted a little further towards the sun.

This means it gets more light, which means more heat, which means… SUMMER!

So, when the part of the planet you live on is tilted towards the sun, it's summer.

And when it's tilted away from the sun, it's winter.

And when it's in between those two, it's kind of an in between heat, meaning spring and fall!
