Why Does Our Skin Wrinkle in Water?

3 min read

Morning Wrinklers!

Look at this video of a finger in water getting… wrinkly??

Weird…

But why does that happen?

Well, imagine you’re going swimming…

Now it might not look like it…

But your ENTIRE body is covered in a super thin layer of oil.

Why?

Well, this oily layer makes your skin waterproof.

Think about it: when it's raining, your clothes get soaked.

But your skin?

Water just slides off or evaporates.

Okay, but the issue arises when you spend a little TOO much time in water.

Yup, the oils start washing off.

Which means the water can now start absorbing into your skin!

Good question.

It's because the skin there is like SUPER thick!!

And see all those dead skin cells?

Ya, they suck ALL that water up like a sponge.

But all that extra water needs space.

So the outer layer of skin starts to pull on the layers below.

Which causes… wrinkles!!
