How Whale Poop Cures Climate Change 🐋

3 min read

Morning Whalers!

You read that title right…

Whale poop is literally helping save the world!

But how???

Well it all comes down to these little guys:

Phytoplankton.

They survive off sunlight, iron, carbon dioxide and a bunch of other nutrients.

And lots of ocean critters survive off of them…

Not only this, but they produce like half the world's oxygen and suck up over a 3rd of all our carbon emissions…

(AKA the stuff that causes global warming)

Making these tiny phytoplankton dudes KEY players in the fight against climate change.

But there's a problem.

These happy little phytoplankton…

Die.

And when they do, they sink to the bottom of the ocean and get gobbled up by things like krill.

This means that all those nutrients they ate like iron and carbon dioxide are now all the way down here:

Locked away inside of phytoplankton predators like krill, meaning they can’t be used up at the top of the ocean to feed more phytoplankton.

See the problem?

This is where the whales come in:

They hoover up all the krill at these low depths.

But then, because whales don't breathe water, they swim to the surface to breathe fresh air.

While up there they take a massive….poo!

Then they swim back down to get more krill.

Through this cycle, whales act as a living pump to bring iron and carbon dioxide from deeper waters back to the surface.

Which feeds more phytoplankton!

Which makes MORE phytoplankton…

Who then suck up EVEN MORE carbon dioxide!!

Thus saving us all from global warming!
