Do Carrots Actually Give You Better Eyesight? 🥕

Has your mom ever told you this before?:

But… is it actually true?

Do carrots REALLY make you see better?

Well, technically yes, but not really.

See, if you have a shortage of vitamin A, it can affect your vision.

Making your eyes all cloudy like this:

And carrots do actually help your body produce vitamin A.

Thing is, most people don't have a vitamin A deficiency, so it's not really an issue.

And they definitely don't give you superhuman vision or anything.

So then, where does the whole:

“Eat your carrots, they will make you see better” thing come from?

Well, it was actually an elaborate rumor made up by the British government during WW2.

Let me explain.

So, it's the early 1940s.

Britain is getting bombed non-stop by Germany during the blitz.

But the Germans had one major problem:

The Royal Air Force.

Who, annoyingly for the Germans, kept shooting their planes down.

So Germany decided to switch it up and bomb almost exclusively at NIGHT.

Making it much harder for the RAF to fight back, and forcing Britain to introduce the dreaded blackouts!

But here's the thing:

The British had just invented a brand new overpowered radar system that meant pilots could literally see their enemies in the dark.

Called Airborne Interception Radar.

Now, Radar had existed for a while but this was a cut above, accurate up to 1 meter.

It was the difference between this:

And the British Government really didn’t want the Germans to find out about their fancy new overpowered Radar system.

And by this point, British pilots had started shooting down German planes… at night.

Pretty suspicious…

So how do you keep a Radar technology that literally makes it possible to see in the dark a secret?

PROPAGANDA!

The UK Ministry of food started a massive campaign promoting the idea that carrots, of all things, help you see in the dark.

They also claimed that their fighter pilots could pick out enemy aircraft in the dark because they honed their eyes using carrots!

So the Germans over in Europe were like:

But it was actually all just a trick.

All to keep their brand new radar tech secret lol.
